Cloud Agent Skills Overview

Learn what BoldCreate skills are and how repository and system skills work.

A skill is a reusable set of instructions that teaches the agent how to do a specific job your way. Each skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file holding the main instructions. It can also hold reference files such as checklists, templates, examples, or scripts. You write a skill once, commit it to your repository, and the agent follows it in every task where it applies.

Skills in your repository are files, so your team shares them through Git, and they are reviewed and versioned like code. Skills can also come from plugins: the Skills tab on the Customize page lists every skill your installed plugins bring.

Use cases

  • Standardize reviews: give the agent your team’s review checklist and report format.
  • Follow project conventions: describe your API design rules, naming style, or folder layout.
  • Repeat a workflow: write the steps for a release, a migration, or a dependency upgrade.
  • Share domain knowledge: explain internal libraries, product rules, or test data.
  • Bundle helpers: include templates or scripts the agent can read and run.

How skills work

  1. You add a skill to a repository. Create a folder with a SKILL.md file. See Create and manage skills.
  2. The agent discovers it. When a run starts, the agent lists the skills in the repositories of the task. It sees only each skill’s name, description, and path.
  3. The agent picks the skills that apply. When your task matches a skill’s description, the agent reads the full SKILL.md and follows it. It reads reference files only when it needs them.
  4. You can point the agent to a skill. Name the skill in your prompt to make sure it uses it. See Create and manage skills.

Because the agent chooses from the description, a clear description matters more than any other field. Say what the skill does and when to use it.

Note: Changes to a skill apply from the next run. A run that is already in progress keeps the version it started with.

Types of skills

TypeWhere it livesWho can change it
Repository skillsIn a skills folder in a repository used by the taskAnyone who can commit to that repository
System skillsBuilt into Bold Create, for example live-preview-tunnelNo one. They are available to everyone.

Repository skills follow the repository’s access. Anyone who can read the repository can use its skills. There are no private, team, or organization scopes.

Where the agent looks

In each repository used by a task, the agent checks these folders at the root:

  • .claude/skills/
  • .github/skills/
  • .deepagents/skills/
  • .agents/skills/
  • .boldcreate/skills/

Each skill is a folder that contains a SKILL.md file, for example .boldcreate/skills/release-notes/SKILL.md. If a task uses several repositories, the agent finds the skills in all of them.

What a SKILL.md looks like

---
name: release-notes
description: Write release notes from merged pull requests. Use when asked to prepare a release or changelog.
---

# Release notes

1. List pull requests merged since the last tag.
2. Group them under Features, Fixes, and Chores.
3. Use the format in templates/release-notes.md.

The name must match the folder name and use lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens. The description can be up to 1,024 characters.
